Reading Assignment 1
The story of DaVinci’s collection of art and how the libraries helped preserve his art is a story that is beginning to fade. Libraries were once used as storehouses where the most important documents were kept. They were extremely important because they allowed people who could not afford the expensive books (especially before the printing press was developed) to have access to knowledge. However, information has made a distinct change from being difficult and expensive to obtain to become easy and often free. This has made libraries to lose some of their importance even though some people still visit libraries for various reasons. There is a belief that libraries will regain their importance and stature in our society by the trends that technology is setting. Technology is the reason why libraries are evolving and there are trends that may explain the reasoning for it. A belief of an “ultimate form” of communication is going to be developed and writing is going to become obsolete. Also the belief of all of our current technology will end and be replaced by something new just like 8 tracks were replaced by CDs. I think that libraries are going to have to evolve with the changing technology. If books become a thing of the past it is going to be important for libraries to be technologically up to date to still draw in people who are seeking information. People still may use all the research options the library has today but most likely people will be using technology to do more of their everyday research. Technology has made it much faster and more convenient to do research. If this enables people to do more research because it has become easier, then I think that technology is a positive attribute to have.
